Cyprus Health Tourism Council President, UBP MP Dr. Ahmet Savaşan said, “Our government has important duties for a sustainable environment.”.
Pointing out that the unprecedented destruction of nature by human beings, their unconsciousness about the environment, their excessive ambition to maintain their daily lives, disrupt the ecological system and cause serious environmental problems, the President of the Cyprus Health Tourism Council, UBP MP Dr. Ahmet Savaşan, The UN Environment Agency emphasized that ‘with unconscious industrialization and modern consumption habits, the world is facing abnormal climate changes, drought and thirst, and the decline in biodiversity and species’.
In a television program he participated in, he pointed out that people, who are social beings, can ignore the environmental dimension while meeting their needs. Ahmet Savaşan, “Of course, our government and businesses have great responsibilities and duties for a cleaner and more sustainable environment. In order to protect our nature, we must adopt a “zero waste” policy. We also need to make arrangements to provide more education on environmental awareness to our students as soon as possible.”.
FIGHTING WE ALL HAVE A DUTY AS WELL AS THE GOVERNMENT...
Pointing out that in addition to the government, we, as individuals, also have important duties to reduce our waste and leave the environment cleaner for future generations, Dr. Dr. Dr. Özyeğin pointed out that we, as individuals, also have important duties to reduce our waste and leave the environment cleaner for future generations. Ahmet Savaşan, In order to raise awareness for a sustainable environment and to contribute to the protection of the environment, it is absolutely necessary to regulate our behavior and lifestyle and to minimize the carbon footprint.”.
Savaşan listed the things that can be done for a sustainable environment as follows:
Of course, environmental cleanliness requires not throwing even a small piece of paper on the ground, throwing garbage in the garbage can, putting our waste in our bags or pockets if we cannot find a garbage can, leaving the beaches and forests as we found them.
“WE SHOULD AVOID THE USE OF PLASTIC”
Plastic waste poses a great threat to marine life. Giant plastic islands in the oceans are destroying marine life. Living creatures both consume plastic wastes as food and these wastes are broken into invisibly small pieces and mixed into the entire food chain. For this reason, we should make more space for glass in our homes instead of plastic.
“IT IS ESSENTIAL TO REDUCE DISPOSABLE PRODUCTS”
Disposable products such as cling film, paper towels, bags, straws, plastic bottles and coffee filters were not so common in the past. For this reason, it is now possible to use alternatives to disposable products. We can minimize our waste by using washable fabric filters instead of paper coffee filters, storage containers instead of cling film, mesh instead of grocery bags, glass straws instead of plastic straws, washable cloths instead of paper towels.
“RECYCLING TOILET PAPER CAN REDUCE GREENHOUSE GASES BY 30 PERCENT”
There are so many battery-powered devices in use today. So disposable batteries cause a lot of waste. We can switch to rechargeable batteries instead. Switching to toilet paper made from recycled products can reduce greenhouse gases by at least 30 percent.
“WE SHOULD REDUCE WATER CONSUMPTION”
According to a recent University of Michigan study, using a dishwasher is more environmentally friendly than washing dishes by hand. This is because using a dishwasher instead of washing by hand reduces water consumption. However, running the dishes through the water wastes water. Instead, you can scrape off the food residue. In addition, we should be careful not to leave the water running while brushing our teeth or washing our hands.
“DO NOT POUR FRYING FAT DOWN THE SINK!”
1 liter of waste oil can pollute 1 million liters of drinking water. When used oils are poured into seas, lakes and rivers, they cover the water surface, preventing the transfer of oxygen from air to water and causing the death of fish and other living things. Moreover, it pollutes groundwater. For this reason, we should recycle frying oils by delivering them to municipalities instead of pouring them down the sink. It is vital that municipalities do their part in this regard.
“WE SHOULD USE GLASS CARBOYS”
Instead of buying water in carboys or plastic bottles, it is useful to use water purifiers that can be attached to the tap or jug. Or we should use glass carboys instead of plastic. In this way, we can both save economically and reduce the use of plastic.
“WE SHOULD RECYCLE OUR WASTE”
However, it is useful to recycle the plastic, paper, metal and glass products that you want to dispose of by sorting them correctly. We should remember that these products are collected in certain places and collected by municipalities.
“WE CAN COMPOST HOUSEHOLD WASTE”
We can compost food scraps, vegetable and fruit peels, raw paper, coffee pulp and brewed tea leaves, which are called household waste, and bring them together with the soil.
“WASH YOUR LAUNDRY IN COLD WATER”
According to the American Cleaning Institute, about 90 percent of a washing machine's energy goes into heating the water. According to the Institute, households that wash in cold water emit less carbon dioxide. Therefore, we should strive to reduce the use of hot water for washing clothes.
“PLUGGED-IN APPLIANCES ACCOUNT FOR 5 TO 10 PERCENT OF HOUSEHOLD ENERGY USE’
Plugged-in electronic devices account for 5 to 10 percent of a home's energy use. For this reason, it is useful to unplug the devices you are not using.
“DON'T NEGLECT TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS AT HOME”
We can save money by replacing old bulbs with LED bulbs. Windows are also responsible for energy loss. To reduce the loss, we can replace the glass or replace the worn-out tires surrounding the edges of the glass. If you are going to buy a washing machine, refrigerator, heater and cooler, we should also investigate the energy consumed by the product. This way we can save a lot of money on consumption.
“HOME SOLAR PANELS SHOULD BE USED”
The cost of environmentally friendly household solar panels has dropped significantly in recent years. If our home is suitable, we can save on electricity bills and use environmentally friendly energy with solar panels.
“WE SHOULD GIVE IMPORTANCE TO CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION”
Savaşan said, “Let's not forget that the excessive consumption that has emerged in recent years, especially with the widespread use of social media, also negatively affects the environment. Especially considering that between 2,500 and 10,000 liters of water is spent to produce a pair of jeans, it is necessary to give up the disposable logic of textile products.”.
“WE ALL HAVE IMPORTANT DUTIES...”
Ahmet Savaşan He concluded his speech with the following sentences:
“With the awareness that we all have important duties in raising social awareness on environmental issues in order to leave a livable, green and clean world for future generations, I celebrate World Environment Day on June 5, and I hope that everyone will do their part to increase social awareness on the environment and leave a livable, healthy, green and clean world for future generations.“
